Known for its school spirit and focus on undergraduate education, JMU is a great option for students looking for a medium-sized state school not far from Washington, DC. Here are some interesting facts I learned on my tour this week:

When you tour Lehigh University, be sure to wear sneakers! The architecturally beautiful campus is spread out on a mountain slope overlooking the old steel mills. Lehigh's student population is made up of about 4,900 undergraduates and 2,200 graduate students, and divided among four schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Economics, P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, and College of Education. Here are a few interesting facts about Lehigh:
On my way through Bethlehem, PA, I drove through Moravian College, a small private school of about 1,600 undergraduate students (around 60% are in-state). Moravian is known for strong programs in Music, Education, and Nursing. The campus is also home to the Moravian Theological Seminary.
I recently spent an afternoon touring Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. Located on a beautiful campus in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley, Muhlenberg has about 2,200 undergraduate students. About 75% come from either New Jersey, New York or Pennsylvania -- but our tour guide Ginelle grew up in California, and raved about the welcoming community on campus. Popular programs at 'Berg include pre-med and performing arts. Here are some (random!) interesting facts:
Last Friday, my colleagues and I spent the morning touring Lafayette College in Easton, PA -- about a 3 - 3.5 hour drive from Montgomery County, MD. Lafayette is a small liberal arts school of about 2,400 undergraduate students. It is recognized for its strong Engineering department, which can be hard to find in a school this size. In addition, Lafayette is 53% male and competes in NCAA Division I athletics -- two other aspects that make it stand out compared to other small liberal arts colleges. A few other unique and interesting facts about Lafayette:
Today I spent a sunny morning touring Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, just under two hours from Montgomery County. With 1,400 undergraduates, students can expect small classes and personalized attention. Here are some reasons to check out Washington College:
Duke University is made up of approximately 6,700 undergraduate students. Students can apply to the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences or the Pratt School of Engineering. Duke typically accepts roughly 10% of regular applicants and 30% of Early Decision applicants. If it is your top choice, consider applying ED! Some notable facts about Duke:
UNC-Greensboro has about 14,000 undergraduate students divided between six schools -- Arts & Sciences, Business & Economics, School of Education, Health & Human Sciences, Nursing, and Music/Theatre/Dance. Only 10% of students are from out-of-state, and they come mostly from NJ, NY, VA, SC and PA. The pretty and traditional looking campus is located about 10 minutes walking distance from downtown Greensboro, which is full of cute shops and restaurants.
Looking for a small progressive campus founded by Quakers, where you call professors by their first names? Guilford College in Greensboro, NC could be for you. Students at Guilford are proud of their school's diversity and sustainability efforts. A piece of their campus was once part of the Underground Railroad!
I spent this morning in High Point, North Carolina, the furniture capital of the world! High Point University has a beautiful campus full of luxurious amenities including an outdoor swimming pool, kiosks with free breakfast, and a steakhouse. Want to major in Home Furnishings, Exercise Science or Entrepreneurship? With around 4,000 students, small classes and beautiful surroundings, High Point could be an excellent option.
